Nerines in Australia

Our new and exciting website offering over two hundred cultivars and species of Nerines is here and ready to take your order.

Nerine History

The history of this collection goes back to the early 1980s when its originator moved into a property in Houghton (South Australia). In clearing the garden he found some beds of Nerines. He fell in love with them and very quickly became obsessed with the genus. This was before the internet and he had trouble trying to find other Nerine tragics in Australia and so he started looking overseas. He turned his attention to England and wrote to several. Only Nerine Nurseries (no longer trading) was interested in exporting to Australia. He corresponded with Sir Peter Smithers and Edmund Rothschild and eventually imported two hundred bulbs from Tony Norris in England. He established his own quarantine station and imported one hundred named and one hundred unnamed cultivars (part of the Harrison collection) from New Zealand. Sadly he died three years after importing the bulbs and that is where this story may have ended - but it didn't.

His son maintained the collection and kept it growing, flowering and multiplying. Again the collection could have disappeared with the death of the son - but it didn't

Now we have the third generation caring for the collection and it is time for the plants in the collection to be made available to the public.

The plants will be available by mail order through this website. We will post by express post on the Monday or Tuesday of the week after the order is received. We will also be attending major plant fairs in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia. For people living in Western Australia and Tasmania there will be a minimum order size and some additional costs.

Eventually you will be able to download the complete catalogue of available plants.
